Additional human research ethics policies include those relating to recognition of an existing ethics approval obtained from another institution, and policies relating to tobacco industry funding and requirements imposed by the Graduate Research and Scholarships Office

Recognition of an existing ethics approval from another institution

It is a requirement of the National Statement that institutions minimise duplication in the review and approval of human research ethics applications. Therefore, the University has adopted a policy that generally accepts the ethics approval of another NHMRC-registered ethics committee as sufficient to authorise the involvement of a UWA staff or student researcher.

Although the University reserves the right in all cases to conduct its own formal ethics review, on most occasions this is not required. However, UWA staff and student researchers must obtain ‘recognition of an existing ethics approval from another institution’ before they commence any research activities. 

 

Tobacco Industry Funding

Research funding from the tobacco industry, or associated bodies, is not accepted or administered by the University. For the University’s policy on funding from the tobacco industry can be found below.
