UWA Archaeology and Centre for Rock Art Research + Management Clean Up At Australian Archaeological Association Conference 2016 Awards Ceremony!

At this year’s AAA Awards ceremony, almost half the awards on offer went to UWA staff, adjuncts, Indigenous partners, alumni and students. These were:

Jo McDonald
Won the Rhys Jones Medal for her Outstanding Contribution to Australian Archaeology. This is AAA’s highest award and it was given in recognition of Jo's contribution to cultural heritage management and rock art research.  This year the medal was also awarded to Paul Taçon, Griffith University.
Nyiyaparli Aboriginal Corporation & Archae-aus (Caroline Bird and Eddie McDonald)
Won the John Mulvaney Book Award for their collaboration that resulted in “Kakatungutanta to Warrie Outcamp: 40,000 years in Nyiyaparli country”.
Jacqueline Matthews
Awarded AAA Life Membership for her sustained and significant Contribution to the Australian Archaeological Association.
Brittany George
Judged the Best Student Poster for “Western Australian high school students’ perceptions of archaeology”
Nyiyaparli Aboriginal Corporation & Archae-aus (Caroline Bird, Jim Rhoads, Fiona Hook and Eddie McDonald)
Won Best Poster for “Issues of Scale and Resolution in Interpreting Surface Artefact Scatter in the Inland Pilbara”.
Balanaggarra Aboriginal Corporation (represented by Jason Gore) and CRAR+M (Peter Veth, Sven Ouzman & Sam Harper)
Won the Best Paper related to Radiocarbon Dating - Waikato Award for their “Kimberley Visions: A New Generation of Rock Art Research Within the Cultural Landscapes of Australia’s North-Eastern Kimberley”.

The close involvement and recognition of indigenous partners is especially gratifying given the conference them “Interwoven: Indigenous and Western knowledge in archaeology and heritage”.
