Human Research Ethics Procedures

Human Research Ethics Management At UWA

Researchers at the University of Western Australia must not undertake human research unless the University has provided its own ethics approval, or the project has been reviewed and approved by another institution under an equivalent ethical framework. In some cases you need to notify UWA of your non-UWA ethics approval.

Notification of an existing ethics approval (from another institution)

Your responsibility

All staff and student researchers at the University of Western Australia require ethics approval before commencing human research.

University of Western Australia policy

The University of Western Australia is regularly involved in cross-institutional research involving other Western Australian institutions, for example, other Australian universities and major public hospitals and health agencies in WA.

The National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research requires that all institutions eliminate duplication in ethics review and administration wherever possible. Therefore, the University of Western Australia’s policy is to recognise an ethics clearance that has been provided by another institution. while reserving the right to conduct its own human research ethics review where circumstances may warrant.

There are some circumstances where it is vital for UWA researchers and research students to notify UWA of their non-UWA approval.  These include where:

  •
  • UWA students or staff will be participants in the research.
  • The project is a clinical trial, because the University's insurance may need to declare it.
  • There is a UWA student involved in the project, because the student's enrolment may require it.
  • The funding is administered by UWA and releasing funds requires a UWA ethics reference number.

Your documents

To notify the University of your non-UWA ethics approval, email the following documents to the Human Ethics office ([email protected]):

  • Apply via ROAP
  • Include with your application a copy of the ethics approval letter from the other institution and evidence that all applicable UWA staff are named researchers on this project.
