Security Sensitive Biological Agents (SSBA) Regulatory Scheme This regulatory scheme is being implemented to improve the security of biological agents of security concern in Australia. It builds on Australia's obligations under the Biological and Toxins Weapons Convention and UN Security Council Resolution 1540. SSBAs have been classified into Tier 1 and Tier 2. To store or perform research with these agents requires the Institution to be registered with the Department of Health and Ageing. Registration of the Institution must occur BEFORE the agent is imported into this site. The only facility at UWA which meets the standard for containment of these agents is at Shenton Park. TIER 1 Agents will be regulated as of Jan 2009. The University of Western Australia is NOT registered to handle any Tier 1 agents. Should you wish to hold or work with these agents, please contact the UWA Responsible Officer for Tier 1 SSBAs, Dr Malcolm Lawson. Tier 2 Agents will be regulated from Jan 2010. The University of Western Australia has carried out an audit of individuals who hold or handle Tier 2 agents. No Tier 2 agents have been found. The University of Western Australia is NOT registered to handle any Tier 2 agents. If you require advice regarding this issue, please contact the Secretary of the Institutional Biosafety Committee, Dr Sylvia Lachberg.
