Research Publications

The Collection of Research Publications at UWA

Each year UWA collects publications data relating to the research publications of UWA staff and students.  Information obtained from the collection is used in the determination of UWA's internal budget and is also reported to DEST for use in allocating the research component of the Commonwealth Operating Grant (formerly called the research quantum).

Publication details are held in the UWA Publications Database and may be viewed by UWA staff (enter your Pheme or Admin username and password). The actual publications are not held centrally.

The collection takes place in in the first half of the year, generally peaking in March/April.  It is school based, with an academic staff member as the primary contact and frequently a member of the administrative staff to assist in keying the data.  Data entry is via the web using the web entry form specifically designed for the purpose. 

A manual is published yearly to outline the process and the criteria for classification of publications. A copy of the manual is sent to Deans and Heads of Schools/Centres.  After collection and checking of the data centrally by Research Services, reports are prepared and the publications data is audited (physically) by discipline based groups of  UWA academics.  This generally takes place in May each year. A kit for auditors is available to outline the processes required in the audit.

From time to time the publications data is audited by external auditors. This occurred in 2001 and 2002. It is possible that 2006 data will be externally audited.

Once the publications collection and audit is complete, the lists of UWA publications by school are placed on the UWA home page for general perusal. Copies of these publications are not held centrally and all external enquiries about specific publications should be addressed to the school or individual concerned.
