A collection of good Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) is a prerequisite for successful Quality Assurance (QA).
QA techniques and good management practices require standardised, approved written working practices.
Why have SOPs
SOPs are intended to ensure the quality and integrity of work carried out within Animal Care Services is of the highest standard. These are the basic principles of SOPs:
- The SOPs should follow a standard layout.
- It is essential SOPs are available to all staff for referral.
- Documentation should be regularly reviewed and changed to reflect working practices.
- Staff must fully understand the SOP and follow it rigorously.
- If deviations occur, these must be documented.
Responsibility
- It is the responsibility of management to ensure these documents are reviewed regularly and all equipment required to carry out the procedures is available and correctly maintained.
- It is the responsibility of staff and visitors to animal care facilities to comply with this documentation and inform management of any discrepancies that occur.
Policies and procedures
Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are developed and used by Animal Care Services for animal care and husbandry, and facility management. Specific research requirements are not included in Animal Care Services' SOPs and will need to be incorporated in the animal ethics application.
