Animals and research

A focus on research of an international quality and the fostering of an outstanding research culture have positioned UWA as one of the best universities in Australia and in the top 150 in the world.

The use and need for animals in research is complex, sensitive, and necessary.

As a result of its complexity, the issue is the responsibility of many different areas at UWA. This structure ensures, however, that the use of animals in research work and teaching is conducted in accordance with the highest ethical standards.

Using animals in research or teaching at UWA

If you are starting out, contact Animal Care Services for advice and guidance. You will need to be able to discuss:

  • the scope of the project
  • general aspects of the project
  • the procedures involved
  • the use of biological agents.

Before submitting your Animal Ethics Committee application you will be required to meet with the Technician in Charge.

The Animal Ethics team is responsible for

  • administration and policy issues relating to experimentation on animals, genetic manipulation and biosafety
  • processing research applications for consideration by the Animal Ethics Committee, and the Institutional Biosafety Committee to ensure procedural and policy compliance with State Government legislation and associated regulations.

Your application will need to pass through either of these committees whether or not the animals are looked after through UWA's Animal Care Facilities.

Policies and guidelines

The UWA policy on the Use of Animals in Research and Teaching is the overarching policy.

There are many other policies and guidelines provided to help you, including from UWA, State and national sources.
