Australian Research Council Future Fellowships: Internal Guidelines

The University of Western Australia welcomes applicants for Australian Research Council Future Fellowships to join our word-class research teams. These guidelines are prepared to assist candidates submitting applications for Future Fellowships through UWA.

Future Fellowship appointees at UWA may receive an ongoing position at the end of the Fellowship subject to continuing high performance and Head of School approval. See the University Policy on Appointment of Mid Career and Senior Fellows.

To be eligible to receive Fellowship Gap Central funding your application must be subject to internal peer review via Plutus and must be submitted to the Research Grants Office by the internal closing date. These guidelines should be read in conjunction with the ARC Funding Rules, and Instructions to Applicants before completing an application. The following is provided as a guide

It's important to note the following: 

  • Applicants cannot submit more than 2 Future Fellowship proposals in the funding rounds between 2009-2016
  • Future Fellows cannot apply for a subsequent Future Fellowship
  • There are limits, outlined in the Funding Rules (pp11-12), on applying for and holding a Future Fellowship in addition to other ARC schemes. In particular, researchers cannot apply for or hold more than one Discovery Project and a Future Fellowship.

Eligibility exemptions

Future Fellowship candidates must have between 5-15 years research experience since being awarded their PhD (or equivalent research qualification) at the closing date of submission of Proposals.  A PhD must have been awarded on or between 1 March 2002 and 1 March 2012.

Statement by the Administering Organisation outlining Strategic Alignment

As part of the application, a statement must be prepared explaining how the Fellowship will align with and/or complement the staffing profile of UWA. The statement must be signed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research). Details of the content to be included in the Statement are available under section B3.3.1 of the Funding Rules.

Applicants will need to consult with their Research Development Advisor and their Head of School for assistance with drafting the statement. Once the statement has been finalised the Research Development Advisor will arrance for it to be signed and returned to applicants in time for uploading into the application on RMS. The statement is a vital part of the application as it represents 15% of the selection criteria.

Request for non-assessors

Applicants may, if they have reason, nominate any person or persons whom they do not wish to assess their application, using the Request not to Assess form.

The request not to assess form must be emailed to arc-research@uwa.edu.au, and not submitted direct to the ARC.

Submission Process

Applicants must complete an online form on the ARC’s Research Management System (RMS).
Please consult the information on the system, including how to create a username and gain access.

Create application on RMS. Ensure you update your profile. Upload any required attachments, including the Grant Proposal PDF.

  1. Within RMS, generate the PDF for this Proposal.
  2. Email the Proposal PDF and the UWA Application Cover Sheet to Research Grants at arc-research@uwa.edu.au. This must occur by the internal closing date.
  3. The application may continue to be refined on RMS during this period.
  4. Once feedback has been received from Research Grants, finalise the application and submit on RMS, ensuring the application has the status of Submitted to Research Office. This must occur no later than two working days prior to the ARC closing date. Research Grants will then submit the application to the ARC.

 NOTES:

  1. Research Grants will only provide feedback to applicants who internally submit their applications by the internal closing date, unless exceptional circumstances exist.
  2. Only submit to arc-research@uwa.edu.au. Do not submit to any other email address. Do not submit any hard copy documents.
  3. Research Grants will only submit applications to ARC after receipt of the UWA Application Cover Sheet.
