Procedure in the case of an animal being unwell

A focus on research of an international quality and the fostering of an outstanding research culture have positioned UWA as one of the best universities in Australia and in the top 150 in the world.

Policies

UWA policies are provided for:

It is possible that during some stage of your research or teaching, an animal in your care becomes unwell.

If this happens, your response must be:

  • entirely consistent with what your Animal Ethics Approval states
  • consistent with what you have agreed that your responsibilities are.

You must inform the Facility Technician in Charge, or the Facility Senior Technician and take further advice from them.

If the condition is serious and that the condition of the animal has reached the point of euthanasia, then the animal must be euthanased and made available for necropsy.

Depending on the circumstances, the responsibility for necropsy will be determined by Director, Animal Care Services or the Chair of the Animal Ethics Committee.
